Anonymous: Portrait of Maurits Ripperda tot Holwierde (1606)

A portrait by an anonymous Dutch artist. The man on this painting is Maurits Ripperda tot Holwierde (1536-1609), lord of Norden, Farnsum, Petten en Dornen and bailiff of Norden and a member of the influential Ripperda in the Dutch province of Groningen. The painting shows Maurits Ripperda at the age of 70 ('ÆTATIS SUÆ 70', upper right corner), his coat-of-arms and his personal motto: 'DURUM PATIENTIA FRANCO' - 'By patience I break what is hard' (upper left corner). Painting from 1606.
