Jan Beerblock: The Wards at Saint John' Hospital (1778)

A painting by the Flemish artist Jan Beerblock (1739-1806). The depicted interior is that of the Saint John' Hospital in Bruges. This hospital was founded around 1150 to take care of the poor, travelers and the sick. The nurses of the hospital were the nuns and monks of the nearby Augustinian monastery. The paintings shows a ward in the hospital with each patient having a separate box-bed, nuns taking care of the patients. a patient on the left apparently receiving the sacraments of the sick and dying. The litter at the right with 2 men standing next to it is the ambulance of the hospital. Painting from 1778.
