Adolph Artz: In the orphanage of Katwijk-Binnen (1870 - 1890)

A painting by the Dutch artist David Adolph Constant Artz (1837-1890). This painting shows a scene from the orphanage of the Dutch town of Katwijk-binnen (now Katwijk aan den Rijn). This orphanage was located at the kerkstraat until the building was demolished in 1929. The painting shows 2 orphans busy with their homework while the homework of a third orphan is being inspected by one of the 'binnenmoeder' (literally 'inner mother', one of the women who run the orphanage and deal with the daily affairs). Painting from 1870-1890.
