Grant Wood: American Gothic (1930)

(Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, USA)

An iconic painting by the American artist Grant Wood (1891-1941). The painting depicts a man and a woman standing before a house. The depicted house is a house in Eldon, Iowa - today known as 'the dibble house' (named after its fist owner Charles Dibble). Grant Wood explained that he wanted to paint the house along with "the kind of people I fancied should live in that house". The woman is modeled after the artist sister Nan Wood Graham while Wood's dentist, Dr. Byron McKeeby, was the model for the man. Painting from 1930.
