A set of two paintings by the Dutch artist Maarten van Heemskerck (1498-1574). Depicted are a wealthy couple from the Dutch city of Alkmaar. on the left is Andries Willemsz van Oudshoorn van Sonnevelt (1490-1555). He was regent and held the office of steward of the Abby of Egmond, 'dijkgraaf' (translated "Dike count" - the chair of the regional government bodies charged with managing water barriers, waterways, water levels, water quality and sewage treatment in their respective regions) and regent of the almshouses of Paling and Van Foreest. The woman is Wilhelmina Pietersdr Paling (? - 1567), the wife of Andries. Wilhelmina came from a wealthy family. Her father was
Pieter Claesz Paling (? - 1546) was the wealthiest man of Alkmaar and the founder of the almshouses of Paling and Van Foreest (Dutch: provenhuis van Paling en Van Foreest). Wilhelmina and Andries married in 1516 and got at least two children. paintings from around 1540.
