Franz Xavier Winterhalter: Portrait of Princess Tatyana Alexandrovna Yusupova (1858)

(Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg, Russia)

A painting by the German artist Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805 –1873). The lady on this painting is Princess Tatyana Alexandrovna Yusupova (1828 – 1879), the wife of Prince Nikolai Borisovich Yusupov (1827 - 1891). Tatiana was the lady-in-waiting to the Empress Alexandra Feodorovna (1798-1860)), Empress consort of Russia and the wife of Tsar Nicolas I of Russia. The couple had only 1 surving child: Princess Zinaida Nikolayevna Yusupov (1861 – 1939) who would be the mother of Prince Felix Yusupov, the murderer of Rasputin. This portrait is the second one which was made of Tatiana - on the first portrait she is missing the large blue diamond insignia in the shape of an A on her left shoulder and the Bavarian Order of Theresa with diamonds (the blue ribbon and cross). Painting from 1858.
