Bartholomäus Bruyn the Elder: Mary with saint and Dorothea (1515-1520)

(Alte Pinakothek, Munich, Germany)

A painting by the German artist Bartholomäus Bruyn the Elder (1493–1555), also known as Barthel Bruyn the Elder. This painting is an altarpiece: in the center is Mary with the Christ child with angels in the background who are making music. She is shown here as Queen of the Heaven (the crown on her head) and is sitting beneath a decorated baldachin. Sitting next to her are saint Margaret of Antioch (left) and saint Dorothea of Caesarea (right). Both are virgin saints from the 4th century who were martyred because of their faith. Painting from 1515-1520.
