Suzuki Harunobu: Lovers Walking in the Snow (1764–72)

(Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA)

A woodblock print made by the Japanese artist Suzuki Harunobu (1725–1770). A man and a woman are walking together in the snow and are sharing an umbrella. In Japan this is called an 'ai-ai-gase' pose, literally 'love-love-umbrella'. Putting the names of two people under the symbol of an umbrella is a symbol of love, similar to the heart symbol. Woodblock from around 1764-1772.
