(National Gallery, London, UK)

A painting by the Flemish artist Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641). The two men on this imposing portrait are the youngest sons of Esmé Stewart, 3rd Duke of Lennox (1579 – 1624) and his wife Katherine Clifton, 2nd Baroness Clifton (1592 – 1637). Left is Lord John Stewart (1621-1644) and right is Lord Bernard Stewart (1623 – 1645). Both served as Royalist commanders in the English Civil War (1642–1651) and both of them also were killed in action: John Stewart was killed at the battle of Rowton Heath on 26 September 1645, Bernard died at the Battle of Cheriton on 29 March 1644. Painting from 1638.
