Anonymous: Four grotesque heads (1517-20)

(The Royal Collection, UK)

A drawing made by an unknown Italian artist. These 3 drawings are copies from Leonardo da Vinci and show four 'grotesques'. The four are grouped into two couples of a male and a female. The lower couple is a caricature of the Italian poet Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) and Beatrice Portinari (1265-1290) - Beatrice was an Italian woman who was loved by Dante although she never returned the affection. Drawing from 1517-1520.
