(Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA)

An illuminated page made by an unknown French artist. This page is part of a manuscript which is now called the ' Cloisters Apocalypse'. The book was probably commissioned by a member of the de Montigny family of Coutances, Normandy. It is based upon the Book of Revelation by Saint John the Evangelist which is an apocalyptic prophecy. This page is the beginning of the book and shows the author. According to Christian legend John was exiled in 95AD to the Aegean island of Patmos where he he was given (and recorded) a vision from Jesus. Page from 1330.
