Jean-Etienne Liotard: Portrait of François Tronchin (1757)

(Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, USA)

A painting by the Swiss artist Jean-Etienne Liotard (1702-1789). François Tronchin (1704-1798) was a Swiss lawyer, writer and patron of the arts and art collector. On the table is a book, mathematical instruments, and papers that indicate his taste for architecture and music. The painting next to Tronchin is "A woman in bed" (1647) by Rembrandt (this piece is now in the Scottish National Gallery), the most highly prized painting in Tronchin's art collection. Painting from 1757.
