Anonymous: Five Javanese court officials (1820 - 1870)

(Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands)

A set of five paintings made by an unknown possible Indonesian artist. These paintings aren't portrait but 'types' and depict an Indonesian official in Dutch service (from 1602 until 1949 Indonesia was a Dutch colony). Each painting gives information of the rank, status and region from were these men came. From left to right:

- a Javanese bodyguard
- a Javanese administrator (a 'mantri')
- a Javanese military official
- the head of a district (a 'wedono')
- a Javanese regent (a 'bupati')

Paintings from 1820-1870.
