Anonymous: Green Tara (1260s)

(The JP Getty Museum, Los Angeles, USA)

A thangka (painting on a cotton or silk) made by an unknown Tibetan artist. Tara is a female bodhisattva (person who is on the path towards Buddhahood but has not yet attained it) in
Buddhism. She is regarded as a bodhisattva of compassion and action and is known in many different forms. The two most popular forms are known as the white and green Tara. The green Tara is associated with enlightened activity and abundance. She is shown here in her traditional way. She is seated on a lotus in a posture of ease and readiness for action. While her left leg is folded in the contemplative position, her right leg is outstretched, ready to spring into action. In her left hand she is holding a blue lotus while her right hand makes the boon-granting gesture. Thangka from the 1260s.
