Gabriël Metsu: Man Writing a Letter & Woman reading a letter (1665-67)

(National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin, Ireland)

Two paintings made by the Dutch artist Gabriël Metsu (1629 - 1667). These two paintings form a couple. In the left one a man is sitting behind a table and is writing a letter. The Persian rug on the table (typical Dutch) and silver writing set on the table indicate that this is a wealthy man. There is also a globe in the corner which is a symbol for earthly interests, this means that the man is probably a merchant. The right piece shows a woman who is reading a letter, probably the same letter the man is writing on the left. The letter itself is a love letter as several details show. The little spaniel symbolizes fidelity and loyalty, the Cupid's arrows on the bucket and the maid's old shoes symbolize love and hope for a safe return. The maid is drawing aside a curtain in front of a painting of a naval scene with a stormy sea, this refers to a tumultuous relationship. Two paintings from 1665-1667.
