Bedford Master: the Crucifixion (1410-1430)

(British Library, London, UK)

An illuminated page made by an unknown French artist with the notname 'the Bedford Master'. This page comes from a book now called 'The Bedford Hours', a French late medieval book of hours. The book itself was commissioned by John of Lancaster, 1st Duke of Bedford (1389-1435). John of Lancaster and his wife Anne of Burgundy gave the book to their nephew, the future king Henry VI of England, in 1430. The main subject of this page is the crucifixion. Surrounding the crucifixion are smaller pictures which show other scenes from the passion of Christ: Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus is betrayed by Judas and arrested, Jesus is judged by Pilate, Jesus is scourged and crowned with thorns and Jesus takes up his cross. Page made in 1410-1430.
