Paolo Uccello: The Battle of San Romano, Panel 2; Niccolò Mauruzi da Tolentino unseats Bernardino della Ciarda (1435–1460)

A painting by the Italian artist Paolo Uccello (1397-1475). This piece is part of a set of three paintings dedicated to the battle of San Romano (1 June 1432). The battle was part of a series of conflicts between the various Italian city states. The battle was fought between the Republic of Florence and Republic of Siena. Both sides claimed victory but the Bartolini Salimbeni family in Florence commissioned these three painting to celebrate the Florentine victory. This piece, number 2 of the set shows an incident during the battle: the Florentine commander Niccolò Mauruzi da Tolentino (1350-1435) manages to unseat the commander of the Sienese forces Bernardino della Ciarda (1389-1437).
