A painting by the German artist Christoph Amberger (1505-1562). The man on this portrait is Sebastian Münster (1488 – 1552), a German cartographer, cosmographer, and a scholar. His most famous work is Cosmographia from 1544, the earliest German-language description of the world. The book contains astronomy, mathematics, physical geography, cartography and maps of various cities and countries around the world, including a map of North and South America. Other works of Sebastian Münster include a book Hebrew grammar, translations of the Hebrew Bible, a book about mathematics and geography. Painting from 1552.
