(Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris, France)

An illuminated page made by an unknown Italian artist. This page is from a 16th century copy of "De regimine principum" (= 'On the Government of Rulers'). The De regimine principum is a book written by Giles of Rome (1243-1316), an Italian friar of the Order of St Augustine and a Medieval philosopher and Scholastic theologian. The original book was written by Giles of Rome for Prince Philip, later king Philip IV of France (1268 – 1314). The book is divided into three books: the first on the individual conduct of the king, the second on personal relationships with family and household, and the third on the state. The page shows a street with various merchants and shops. Page from 1501-1525.
