Jan Toorop: Poster for salad oil from Delft (1894)

(Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands)

A poster made by the Dutch artist Jan Toorop (1858-1928). This commercial poster was made for the "De Nederlandsche Oliefabriek" (N.O.F.) - "The Dutch Oil factory" in Delft. In 1898 the NOF fused with the company of the French Emmanuel and Georges Calvé - from that time on the company was known as Calvé (which still exists today). This company extracted oil from peanuts (peanut butter was a by-product from this process). The oil was used for various products such as salad oil for which this is a poster. The logo of the N.O.F. is visible in the center which is also still on the jars of peanut-butter of Calvé. This poster for salad oil was very popular and as a result the jugendstil or art nouveau style was known in the Netherlands as the 'salad oil style". Poster from 1894.
