Jan Tengnagel: Banquet of 17 members of the archers' civic guard company of Captain Geurt van Beuningen (1613)

(Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands)

A painting by the Dutch artist Jan Tengnagel (1584-1631). This group portrait shows 17 men (a complete civic guard company) of the archery guild of Amsterdam. The man with the tall hat (bottom row, second from the left) is Geurt Dircksz van Beuningen, the captain of this company. sitting on his left is his lieutenant Pieter Martensz Hoeffijser. The captain is looking at the standard-bearer Klaas Bisschop and with another man pointing to an empty chair - this is usually a reference to an upcoming promotion. In this case, this would be the promotion of Geurt Dircksz van Beuningen to the rank of colonel in 1612. the artist himself is also on this painting: he is the on the bottom row, second man from the right - Jan Tengnagel was a sergeant in this company. Shown from left to right:

top row:
Hans van der Voort, Jan Cornelisz Meulen, Gerrit Martsz Conijnenburgh, Willem Kik, Heindrik Hogendorp, Cornelis Gerritsz, Laurens Laurensz van Baalen, Cosmo de Moucheron en Pierre de Nimay

bottom row:
standard-bearer Klaas Bisschop, captain Geurt Dircksz van Beuningen (Dairy seller politician, co-founder and director of the Dutch East-India Compagny), lieutenant Pieter Martensz Hoeffijser (a banker - he provided a loan to the Elector of Brandenburg who never paid him back. As a result Pieter Martensz Hoeffijser went bankrupt in 1641), Laurens Jansz van Lier, Heindrick Sybrantsz Voet, Adriaen van Nieulandt (an artist), sergeant Jan Tengnagel en Aert Keyser (a wood merchant).
