Lucas Gassel: Panoramic river landscape with Judah and Tamar (16th century)

(unknown)

A painting by the Flemish artist Lucas Gassel (1480 - 1568/69). Lucas Gassel specialized in landscapes and architectural, usually without regard for any realistic depiction. This piece shows a fantasy landscape with mountains, a river and a small village. In the foreground are Judah and Tamar depicted, two figures from the Old Testament (Genesis 38:12–23). Tamar was the daughter-in-law of Judah. Tamar was twice married to sons of Judah but after the death of her second husband, Jodah was reluctant to give her his remaining and youngest son Shelah. Tamar then disguised herself as a prostitute and seduced Judah who made her pregnant. She later gave birth to two sons: Perez en Zerah. Painting from the 16th century.
