Anonymous: The Trojan War - folio192r (1441)

(Germanisches National Museum, Nuremberg, Germany)

A drawing made by an unknown German artist. This page comes from the book HS998, a book which includes the epic Der Trojanische Krieg (= The Trojan War) written by the German poet Konrad von Würzburg (died August 31, 1287). This page shows the well-known scene of the Trojan Horse. The Trojan Horse is shown inside the city with Greek soldiers coming out of the horse. These Greek soldiers opened the gates for the rest of the Greek army which entered and destroyed the city of Troy, ending the war. As usual with these Medieval books, the scene is depicted in contemporary clothing: full-plate armour, a poleaxe and a two-handed sword. Book from 1441.
