Guillaume Le Testu: Cosmographie Universelle, South Africa & East Indian Sea (1555)

Two maps made by the French privateer, explorer and navigator Guillaume Le Testu (1509/12 – 1573). these two maps come from the book "Cosmographie Universelle selon les Navigateurs, tant anciens que modernes" (= Universal Cosmography according to Navigators, both ancient and modern). This book is a world atlas with 56 maps reportedly based on charts Le Testu had personally drawn by hand on his expeditions. These two maps show South Africa (left map) and India & South-East Asia (right map). Also shown on the map are various fantasy creates such as dragons, headless men (Blemmyes), people with only one leg (Monopods or skiapods) and dog-headed people (cynocephalus). Maps from 1555.
