Fra Filippo Lippi: Portrait of a Man and Woman at a Casement (1435 – 1440)

(The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA)

A painting made by the Italian artist Filippo Lippi (1406 - 1469). This piece is the earliest surviving double portrait in Italy, the first to show the sitters in a domestic setting, and the first with a view of a landscape. The sleeve of the woman has the letters "lealta" (faithful) embroidered. The identity of the couple is unknown but the names of the florentine couple Lorenzo di Ranieri Scolari and Angiola di Bernardo Sapiti, who were married about 1439, have been suggested. Painting from 1435-1440.
