Ramon Casas: Ramon Casas and Pere Romeu on a Tandem (1897)

(Museu Nacional d'Art de CatalunyaBarcelona, Spain)

A painting by the Catalan artist Ramon Casas (1866-1932). This painting was created for the bar Els Quatre Gats which was the centre of the Modernisme art movement in Barcelona. Depicted are the artist (left) and Pere Romeu (right), the owner of the bar, on a tandem bicycle against the Barcelona skyline. The text in the upper right corner reads "To ride a bicycle, you can't go with your back straight" - in order to make progress, you must break with tradition. After the turn of the century, this painting was replaced by another painting of Casas in which the tandem is replaced by a car. Painting from 1897.

The painting which replaced this one: Ramon Casas and Pere Romeu in a Motor Car
